Outsourcing of IS/IT Services
Outsourcing is one of the controversial issues within information processing at present. In the commercial sector, it is an option that has been adopted by a number of companies with varying levels of success during recent years. In the public sector, it has become prevalent through CCT/VCT, and more recently the government’s new "best value" regime.
The objective is the same for every organisation - "how do I get best value from my investment in IS/IT?".
Part of the logic in outsourcing is to remove responsibility for a service that is outside the core manufacturing/distribution/servicing of products and customers. This has the definite benefit of improving the ability to cope with peak loadings and skills shortages without acquiring spare capacity in hardware or staff. However, it also entails possible loss of control of a function that is becoming increasingly key to an organisation’s ability to improve performance and grow.
